ALTHOUGH the best of last year's music scene was highlighted by veteran performers such as
Neil Young, U2, Eric Clapton and BB King - among others - New Year's week is the perfect
time to take a look and listen to a few green artists who are about to take a shot at the
big time in 2001. Here are some promising new faces.
VARIOUS ARTISTS: "ASCAP Presents Heineken's Ampt Music Series"
(ASCAP Music)
4 Stars
If there was a single disc for a sneak peek at the hottest up-and-comers for the next 12
months, there's no better starting point than this sampler from the American songwriters'
society, ASCAP.
The collection features 17 bands - all unknowns - from Boston, Chicago, Miami, Seattle and
Austin. While there are no complaints about content (nearly every act featured here is
top-notch) it would have been nice if a couple of New York's outfits were represented.
Among the compilation's best: Austin singer/songwriter George Devore's "Wait," a
piece of power pop reminiscent of Dave Matthews' snappy sound; Chicago's Frisbie, who
offer jangly guitars and very pretty three-part harmonies; and Brain Rakes' "Ordinary
Day," a inspired song examining life's simple pleasures.
Top honors go to the Giraffes, who operate out of Seattle and may have a slight advantage
over the competition since they were founded by Chris Ballew, the former lead singer and
songwriter for now-defunct, multiplatinum act the Presidents of the United States of
America.
This disc isn't available in stores, but it should be. Order it directly from ASCAP at
www.ascap.com, or by calling the group's offices at (212) 621-6000.
